Optional Audition Workshop – $25
Looking to feel more prepared before auditions? This optional workshop offers a supportive, low-pressure environment to help participants understand the audition process and build confidence.
We’ll cover what to expect at auditions, share tips for selecting and preparing material, and teach a short movement combination similar to what may be used for Hairspray.
Open to all experience levels, this session is a welcoming opportunity to ask questions, practice skills, and get familiar with the audition process. Participation is completely optional and not required to audition.
About the Show
Hairspray is more than a high-energy Broadway musical filled with unforgettable music and larger-than-life characters, it’s a story about inclusion, representation, and the power of community to create change.
Set in 1960s Baltimore, the musical follows Tracy Turnblad as she pursues her dream of dancing on the Corny Collins Show while becoming part of a larger movement for integration and equality. Beneath the humor and heart is a story that celebrates individuality, challenges prejudice and reminds audiences of the importance of standing together.
Third Place Productions was drawn to Hairspray not only for its joy and entertainment, but for the conversations and connections its story continues to inspire. We believe community theatre has the power to bring people together across backgrounds and generations while creating space for empathy, creativity, and shared experience.
Through this production, we hope to create an experience that is energetic, meaningful, and community centered. One that leaves audiences entertained, inspired, and reminded of the importance of belonging and representation both on and off the stage.
Why We’re Doing This
What began as a conversation with a passionate group of local teens has grown into something much bigger. Last summer, students approached Arts Davidson County asking for more opportunities to participate in theatre, create, lead, and build something meaningful together. Their enthusiasm sparked the beginning of what is now Third Place Productions.
Today, Third Place Productions continues to grow as a collaborative community theatre initiative that brings together performers, creatives, and volunteers of all ages while creating meaningful leadership opportunities for emerging young artists.
From fundraising and production planning to creative leadership and community engagement, these students have helped shape the program from the very beginning. Their dedication is a reminder of why community theatre matters; it creates connection, builds confidence, encourages creativity, and gives people a place to belong.
We believe the arts should be accessible and community-centered, and we are proud to continue building a space where both new and experienced performers can learn, collaborate, and shine together.
Arts Davidson County is proud to support this growing program and the people helping bring it to life.
